Books That Make You Think

Published by Matthew K. Tabor May 2nd, 2008 in Everything Else, School Administration, Teaching

pia! pia! pia!

Much is made of Eduwonk’s Friday Fish Porn. This week’s edition features the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence’s Dave Saba.

I hadn’t thought of Mr. Saba since October, 2007 when he blamed sexual misconduct in schools on a shallow teaching pool. He left an indefensible, inadequate comment and never returned.

I don’t eat fish, and despite being a member of the Hartwick Rod & Gun Club, I’m not much of a fisherman, either. It’s cat time.

If you haven’t met her before, meet Princess Pia, The Minion of Evil.

Her vitals:

  • Born: May, 2003
  • Birthplace: Victoria, British Columbia
  • Residences: Victoria, BC, Canada; Boston, MA; Cooperstown, NY [Dual Citizenship]
  • Breed: Burmese Tortie
  • Weight: 4.5 pounds
  • KittenWar Battles: 934 Wins, 1,835 Losses, 391 Draws

Career Highlights: Named after Pia Getty; has logged over 10,000 travel miles by car and plane; killed 1 mouse in 2005, didn’t eat it; razor-sharp claws, freakish quickness; vertical leap of ~46″; illicits reactions like “Sweetest Thing Ever!” and “Awwww!” when introduced; incredibly tiny for an adult Burmese, otherwise normal; weirdly rabid, in the fanatical sense, supporter of John McCain. Often mistaken for a kitten despite being 5.

Here’s Pia resting on a Friday afternoon, head buried as I pound away at the keyboard:

Does she have a Warrior Cats name?

May 2nd, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Barkpelt. She’s a medicine cat in the service of ThunderClan.

I hope she wasn’t one of the ones that died in the fire.

“Fire will save the clan.”

You gotta read books 4 and 5, yo.

Makes me miss having a cat. She is adorable.

I’d like to tell Pia that I’ve written a scathingly funny book, The World Is Your Litter Box, which is in bookstores now. The book is cleverly disguised as a cute cat book so humans will buy it, but is, in fact, a how-to manual FOR cats. Check it out on my website, http://www.theworldisyourlitterbox.com.

Michelle,

For over 4 years now Pia has hung out with me for most of every day. She’s the coolest.

I bought her with money I won playing video poker - I hit a Royal Flush and got $1,250 on a $1.25 bet. I figured that I’d take some of it and get something I always wanted. A Burmese kitten! One of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Quasi,

18 pounds!

Very cool book. This was a funny line in the bios:

“He “works” long hours at his computer and (according to Quasi) does not appear to have a real job.”

I have a feeling that Pia would write the same thing about me. :)

[…] a bit bothered that dogs have trumped cats yet again - Pia is rightly miffed - but I’ll save that for another […]
