BlogRush Doesn’t Work on WordPress-hosted Blogs

by Matthew K. Tabor on September 19, 2007

There’s been some buzz about installing BlogRush on WordPress-hosted blogs.

If you use WordPress standalone on your site [like I do], you can just install the code in the sidebar.php file. If you have a WordPress blog that’s hosted by WordPress [ie., the URL contains "wordpress"], you can’t install widgets - including BlogRush.

Beartwinsmom did the legwork and found the citation in WP’s help/FAQ:

According to the FAQ at WordPress:

“Anything that has a line like this:
script type=”text/javascript” [brackets removed]
or that uses Form or Input tags for instance is not allowed. There are other tags but the effect is the same - they disappear.

There are no exceptions to this.”

If you have a WordPress blog hosted on its own or use Blogger, Typepad or Movable Type, BlogRush has some solid video tutorials to facilitate the install.

Here’s some more legwork. This is from the BlogRush FAQ (which is up and running!):

What Types Of Blogs Will BlogRush Work On?

BlogRush will work on any blog that allows javascript to be used AND has an active RSS Feed. It will work on almost all WordPress software (but not the WordPress.com hosted service), MovableType, TypePad, and Blogger (Blogspot.com) blogs, plus others.

If BlogRush can be used on WordPress blogs, why are there people saying that it can’t?

BlogRush works on any blog using WordPress software, however… WordPress, the company that makes the software, has a free blog hosting service at WordPress.com. Their service is not javascript enabled so our widget won’t work on WordPress.com hosted blogs, but will work on WordPress blogs that are hosted outside of their system (on your own web site).

Make sure you watch the video tutorials on how to do this properly if you haven’t already. These can be found in the Step-By-Step Tutorial section on our site.
