Breaking: Sherman Invades Georgia

by Matthew K. Tabor on August 14, 2008

Hurrah! Hurrah! We bring the Jubilee!

“Marching Through Georgia,” which celebrates General Sherman’s Georgian campaign, has always had international appeal. During the Russo-Japanese War [1904-05], the Russians at Port Arthur heard it over and over again - because the Japanese Imperial Army sang it on their march in after destroying the Russian Pacific Fleet.

After all, we’re all Georgians, and hopefully the right side will sing this centuries-old international pop tune sooner rather than later.

John McCain was at his silliest this week, insisting that nations do not invade each other any more, as though he was simply not aware that American troops remain in Afghanistan and Iraq.

As for the war in Georgia, I would recommend reading up on the topic before commenting on it. The situation is almost exactly analagous to that concerning Serbia and Kosovo.

In that war, as in Georgia, a small breakaway republic containing a different linguistic and ethnic group was set upon by the larger, with thousands of civilians killed in teh indiscriminate shelling.

Russia is playing the same role in South Ossetia as NATO did in Kosovo.

Now, if it could only learn from this example, and reconsider its role in Chechnya, only a few miles away.

Stephen,

You’ve commented on my post in record time - 17 minutes!

Your arrogance and condescension is, as usual, misapplied. Perhaps one day you’ll consider that, yes, it is possible for people with differing opinions to have read a book or actually know something.

b.n.: According to Stephen, we’re all hopelessly dumb and misinformed, so I thought I’d give an enlightening link, too:
